My ‘Altars and Shrines’ have been inspired by the places I have visited, whether it be the amazing spiritual atmosphere of the processions during Semana Santa (Holy Week) in Madrid or the beautiful churches in Rome, Istanbul and Moscow. My family, the children I have sponsored in Ghana and India, my love and my passion for Hollywood film Icons have been deeply important to the work I have developed in recent years.
Originally trained as a painter, I use colour and texture to suggest a particular mood and atmosphere which is evocative of a place, sentiment or memory. The majority of my pieces are like sets for a stage, sometimes theatrical and intense and at times playful and light hearted. The materials I use come from a variety of sources, selected for their unique features and include among other things photographic images, vintage trimmings and jewellery, children’s toys, shells, memorabilia and flowers.
I enjoy photographing the Altars and Shrines in different lighting conditions and love the beauty of candle light; the way it changes the colour and form of the subject matter has always been of fascination to me. At present the Altars and Shrines are all in my home, so the interior in which they reside is also of importance and I continually update and add to them.
